St Hedwig:
Our Story

St Raphael’s parish priest, Father John Krewenka, had a dream to create a place where seniors could live enriching lives with total peace of mind, safe in the knowledge that they had all the mental, physical and spiritual support they needed in a warm and caring environment.

Established by Sydney’s two German- speaking Catholic communities—St Raphael in Blacktown and St Christophorus in Croydon, St Hedwig was predominantly for German-speaking people who found a sense of belonging with like-minded neighbours, and comfort in the freedom to converse in their mother tongue.

The social connection between the retirement village and aged care residents, as well as the distinctly European atmosphere gave St Hedwig a unique charm that also attracted people from the local area. Activities encompassed everything from Oktoberfest to Melbourne Cup, residents enjoyed traditional German meals that tasted of home, and everyone enjoyed the best of both cultures. There was contentment in sharing German language and traditions, in a quiet location surrounded by native bushland.

The cohesive nature of the dual community made for enduring friendships, a sense of belonging and the knowledge there was always someone looking out for you.

In 2000, St Hedwig underwent a significant expansion, almost doubling the number of aged care beds, so they could benefit a wider community.

In 2020, St Hedwig transitioned and merged with Catholic Healthcare, whose proud history of improving the quality and access to aged care for seniors from all walks of life represents the perfect partnership.

A complete redevelopment of the village will deliver 72 contemporary, self-care apartments, along with plans for a new aged care residence* and exceptional lifestyle amenities. The warmth and sense of community on which St Hedwig was founded, still endures today.

*Please note that entry into the residential aged care home is not guaranteed and will be subject to availability and meeting the eligibility requirements set by Commonwealth Government laws.

“St Hedwig is a tight-knit community, a place where you can’t help but form new friendships. One of the most valuable aspects of living here is the sense of security and belonging. The thing I’ve always loved most about the village is how kind and caring the residents are. From the beginning, they’ve always looked out for each other ... that’s the generosity of spirit on which St Hedwig was founded.”

WHO WAS
ST HEDWIG?

Hedwig of Silesia was the wife of Duke Henry of Silesia, the head of the Polish Royal family. She gave her life to helping the poor, the widowed and orphaned, founded several hospitals for the sick and the lepers and donated all her fortune to the church. Many miracles occurred after her death in 1243 and she was canonised by the Catholic Church in 1267 by Pope Clement IV.
